MEMBERSHIP An applicant wishing to become a member of ICHAWI must be a graduate of a recognised conservation training institution such as the University of Northumbria, the Textile Conservation Centre, Camberwell College of Art, or the Courtauld Institute. This should be followed by a minimum of five years practical experience. Having applied for membership, the qualifying candidate will be given the names of three conservators-restorers, members of ICHAWI who have volunteered and been trained to act as mentors. He/she chooses one of these as mentor. The rôle of the mentor is restricted to telling the candidate what to expect during the accreditation procedure, and to answering any questions that may arise. Should the candidate decide to go ahead at this stage, an external assessor will be contacted and the date of the interview arranged. This will take place in the candidate’s studio or on site. He/she will be required to present a number of conserved artefacts for discussion, and a portfolio. Candidates wishing to defer accreditation for a while will also be accommodated. The aim of the Institute is to try to complete the accreditation procedure with in six months from date of application to final outcome. ICHAWI makes every effort to maintain confidentiality during this process. The application fee is €400. The annual subscription is €50. For an application form, please contact the Hon.
